Description: Iyengar yoga is Hatha Yoga as taught by BKS Iyengar. Classes are carefully sequenced to promote health and skill in the body, and stability in the mind. Doing yoga, the Iyengar way means that emphasis is placed on alignment of the body, mind and breath. Props are important and used in every class; so, for class you will need two Mexican blankets, two blocks, yoga mat, and a yoga strap for class. Iyengar Yoga is known for physical poses, though the practice also incorporates the breath and the mind. Iyengar Yoga has its roots in India, though it is a universal practice; it is truly for everyone. As a certified teacher I know how to teach students of all abilities. My job is to meet you where you are at. I have extensive training and direct personal experience in each yoga pose so that I can teach it to you. You will get modifications, corrections, and support every step of the way. Iyengar yoga develops strength, stamina, coordination and flexibility. I use safe and systematic progression of poses to develop your body intelligence and help you grow self-awareness in each pose as a form of meditation in action. The yoga Vedic traditions will be brought into class through chant, yoga philosophy and storytelling. See you in class! Instructor Bonita Smulski-Bizeau has practicing Iyengar yoga for over 20 years. For the past seven years she studied with a Senior Iyengar teacher in teaching application and yoga therapeutics, and has earned certifications from Yoga Alliance, Iyengar Yoga Learning Center, Encinitas; and is a Level II Certified Iyengar Teacher (CIYT). Bonita continues to study with senior teachers in San Diego and the Bay area to keep her certification current and move to the next level of teaching. As a student of Iyengar yoga, Bonita has a dedicated daily yoga practice, a pranayama (breath) practice, plus continuing study and reading of yogic texts such as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Bhagavad Gita. She lives in SCW for the past eight years and looks forward to sharing per passion for yoga with you.
