Class Information for Winter 2020: OVER THERE, the MUSIC OF WORLD WAR I, Tuesday, February 11, 1:00-3:00 pm, RH Johnson Lecture Hall; (W724)
There were more songs written about WWI than any other historical event--except Christmas---maybe.” says historian, Richard Rubin. WWI happened during the peak of the American song publishing business. Having commemorated the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day on November 11, 2018, let’s take a look at---and a listen to--- some of those songs meant to inspire patriotism, boost morale, promise victory & keep America singing till it was over, Over There! Instructor Janet Hochstatter’s interest in sheet music interest began years ago when she found the music in her mother’s piano bench was much more appealing than the piano lesson. Moving to Sun City West, she developed a new hobby of finding old sheet music and accompanying the WESTERNAIRES Chorus on the piano. After 13 years she became the choral director and held that position for ten years until she passed the baton in 2015.
